As clashes erupt between Pakistan and Afghanistan along their shared border, Saudi Arabia’s strategic posture is under scrutiny. The recent formalization of a defense pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in September 2025 has introduced a new dynamic, creating a framework for mutual defense. This agreement, experts suggest, positions the Kingdom as a key strategic ally, ready to defend Pakistan against external aggression.
In response to the latest border incidents, which reportedly began with Afghan forces firing on Pakistani posts, Saudi Arabia has publicly appealed for restraint. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement expressing deep concern over the escalating tensions. “The Kingdom calls for self-restraint, avoiding escalation, and embracing dialogue and wisdom,” the ministry advised, emphasizing the importance of maintaining regional security and stability. Riyadh also reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that foster peace and prosperity for both Pakistani and Afghan peoples.
While Saudi Arabia has not indicated any intent to intervene militarily, the defense pact underscores its readiness to support Islamabad. Meanwhile, the Afghan Taliban government claims a significant victory, stating its forces eliminated 58 Pakistani soldiers and captured numerous border posts. This claim, made by spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, was presented as a response to Pakistan’s alleged territorial violations. The Afghan Defense Ministry further warned Pakistan against repeating such actions.
The ongoing Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict is exacerbated by persistent accusations from Pakistan regarding Afghan soil being used by the TTP. Pakistan maintains that the TTP, responsible for numerous deadly attacks, operates with support from the Afghan Taliban, a claim that continues to fuel bilateral tensions.
