The improving relationship between India and Canada is facing opposition from Khalistani groups. The US-based Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) has escalated tensions by threatening the Indian Consulate in Vancouver. The group has issued a poster targeting India’s new High Commissioner, Dinesh Patnaik. The SFJ claims the consulate is engaged in surveillance and espionage activities targeting Khalistan supporters. Indo-Canadians are being warned to avoid the consulate for visa and passport services on September 19th. The SFJ also raised the issue of Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing in 2023, alleging Indian involvement, as acknowledged by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Parliament. The organization further claims that Indian spy activities continue in Canada. The SFJ states that the RCMP had to provide witness protection to Inderjit Singh Gosal, the current leader of the Khalistan Referendum campaign. The SFJ states the siege aims to hold Indian agencies accountable. A recent internal Canadian government report confirmed that Khalistani extremist groups are receiving financial aid from Canadian-based entities, including organizations like Babbar Khalsa International and International SYF, which are designated as terrorist groups by Canada.
