The status of Ali Shamkhani, a top advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, remains uncertain following reports of Israeli airstrikes. While initial reports suggested Shamkhani’s death in an attack on June 13, Iranian media now claims he is alive and recovering from injuries. This contradictory information has emerged amidst a series of events involving military leaders. A statement allegedly from Shamkhani reads, “I am alive and ready to sacrifice myself.” This statement, along with reports of Shamkhani’s improved condition, appeared across multiple news outlets. Shamkhani, who served as Iran’s national security chief for ten years before becoming an advisor to Khamenei in 2023, had significant influence within the IRGC and the defense ministry. He also held a notable presence in Iran’s foreign relations, gaining recognition in Washington and Europe for his diplomatic work. The reports of Shamkhani’s injuries and recovery come in the wake of reported Israeli attacks targeting key Iranian military personnel. In response, Iran launched ballistic missile attacks against Israel, resulting in casualties and injuries on both sides of the conflict.
