A newly built Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan, China, has partially collapsed following a severe landslide that swept through the region. Dramatic video footage captured the moment of failure, showing the bridge succumbing to the immense force of the sliding earth. Importantly, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities as a result of the collapse. Investigations have commenced to understand the root causes of this unfortunate event.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, impacting the vital Hongqi Bridge which serves as a critical link on a national highway stretching towards Tibet. Social media was abuzz with videos showcasing the bridge’s structural integrity failing as its supports collapsed, sending a significant portion into the river below. A massive dust cloud rose as the landslide consumed the bridge’s foundation. Initial assessments suggest that the inherent geological instability of the steep mountainous terrain, coupled with the area’s history of landslides, likely triggered the collapse. The bridge, recently finished, was a major infrastructure project. Authorities are probing all angles, including potential structural issues, although geological factors appear prominent.
