Large-scale demonstrations have erupted in Nepal, fueled by the government’s recent restrictions on social media platforms. Thousands of Gen-Z individuals participated in aggressive protests in Kathmandu and other locations. During the demonstrations, a significant number of protesters gained access to the Nepalese parliament. Law enforcement responded with tear gas and, as reported, the use of firearms to control the situation. Police established curfews in the vicinity of the presidential, vice-presidential, and prime ministerial residences. The protesters are holding the government accountable for prevalent issues like unemployment, corruption and economic hardship. Protests took place in various other cities including Biratnagar, Bharatpur, and Pokhara. The ban, imposed on September 4, by Prime Minister K.P. Oli’s administration encompassed 26 social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit, and X. The youth claim the ban has a negative effect on education and commerce.
