Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in the UK, has been compelled to resign following a scandal involving tax payments. The issue arose from an independent investigation examining her tax obligations related to a property she had acquired. The findings indicated a breach of the ministerial code of conduct, although Rayner’s integrity and dedication were acknowledged. The report highlighted her need for professional tax guidance. Rayner acknowledged underpaying taxes when she bought the apartment, resulting in approximately £40,000 saved in stamp duty. In her resignation letter, she expressed remorse for not seeking expert tax advice and stressed her intention to pay taxes correctly. She accepted full responsibility, taking into account the investigation’s conclusions and the effect on her family. Prime Minister Keir Starmer accepted her resignation, acknowledging her response to the findings. Rayner’s roles included being Deputy PM and overseeing the Housing department. She had often been a critic of tax compliance from the Conservative opposition. The Labour Party now faces the task of choosing a new deputy leader.
