A Texas Republican, Alexander Duncan, has been criticized for his comments regarding the ‘Statue of Union,’ a 90-foot statue of Lord Hanuman located in Sugar Land, Texas. Duncan argued that the statue of the Hindu deity was inappropriate for the United States, asserting its status as a Christian nation. He took to social media to express his views and included a video of the statue at the Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple. Duncan also used biblical quotations to underscore his position. The Hindu American Foundation has strongly criticized Duncan’s remarks, labeling them as ‘anti-Hindu’ and ‘incendiary,’ and has lodged a complaint with the Texas Republican Party. Duncan is seeking election to the Senate in the 2026 election cycle and is a proponent of conservative values. The Hanuman statue, conceptualized by Sri Chinnajeeyar Swamiji, represents strength, devotion, and service and was unveiled on August 18, 2024.
