The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on Indian imports, prompting US National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett to describe the US-India relationship as “complicated.” During a White House briefing, Hassett connected the new tariffs to the broader strategy of pressuring Russia over the conflict in Ukraine. He explained that the trade dynamics were influenced by both the attempt to secure a peace deal and India’s stance on opening its markets to American goods. The tariffs were implemented following a notice published by the US Customs and Border Protection. The additional 25% duties, bringing the total to 50%, were a result of India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. Hassett emphasized the long-term nature of trade negotiations, suggesting that ups and downs are inevitable. He also hinted that President Trump might escalate pressure if India did not change its position.
