The Trump administration is increasing its military presence in Los Angeles, with the deployment of an additional 2,000 National Guard troops. The Department of Defence stated these troops will support ICE and federal law enforcement operations. This follows an initial order for 2,000 troops issued on Saturday, amid protests sparked by immigration arrests. Sean Parnell, Assistant to the Secretary of Defence for Public Affairs, announced the deployment of the California National Guard to assist ICE and ensure the safety of federal law enforcement officers. This move is taking place as California has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging the legality of the deployments. A White House spokesperson responded to California’s lawsuit, criticizing Governor Gavin Newsom. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has strongly criticized Trump’s decision to federalize the state’s National Guard troops, calling it an abuse of federal authority and a violation of the 10th Amendment, made without Governor Newsom’s authorization and against the wishes of local law enforcement. Governor Newsom accused Trump of creating fear and terror. The protests are a result of ICE raids that have led to the arrest of several undocumented immigrants.
