President Donald Trump stated that the US is close to finalizing a trade deal with India, coinciding with the announcement of new tariffs affecting 14 nations. Speaking from the White House, where he hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump discussed the status of trade negotiations and the actions his administration is taking. The President mentioned existing trade agreements with the UK and China, and the communication sent to other countries outlining the new tariff structures. He also suggested a willingness to adjust the tariffs depending on the circumstances and the willingness of the countries to negotiate their trade policies. Starting August 1, the tariffs will impact countries like Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, South Korea, and Japan. Tariff rates vary significantly, with some nations facing rates as high as 40 percent. A delay to the tariff implementation from July 9 to August 1 was announced by the White House.
