A noticeable shift in the U.S. President Donald Trump’s rhetoric towards India has emerged, with him now referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great friend” and India as an “amazing country.” These statements, shared by the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, underscore India’s importance as a key strategic ally in the Indo-Pacific.
The positive pronouncements coincide with recent high-level discussions, including a phone call between Trump and Modi aimed at accelerating economic collaboration. This call occurred just days after Indian and U.S. negotiators held talks regarding a potential trade agreement. The proposed deal carries significant implications, offering the possibility of tariff relief for India, which has faced steep duties, up to 50%, imposed by the Trump administration. These tariffs, particularly the additional 25% levy implemented in August on goods like Russian crude oil, had previously strained bilateral ties.
Prime Minister Modi shared that the conversation was “cordial and constructive,” covering progress in the bilateral relationship and international and regional matters. He expressed confidence in the continued collaboration between India and the U.S. for global peace and prosperity. While trade was not explicitly mentioned by Modi, the meeting is seen as a crucial step in mending relations and fostering economic interdependence. Both countries have been actively working to repair any damage to their comprehensive global strategic partnership, exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation in trade, technology, defense, and energy.
