During a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders, former U.S. President Donald Trump committed to providing security guarantees to Ukraine. He specified that the United States, not NATO, would be responsible for the country’s security. This announcement has been met with objection from Russia. Russia’s state-run channel, RT, questioned Trump’s decision.
Trump’s statement indicates that the U.S. and its European allies will offer security guarantees to Ukraine instead of pursuing NATO membership for the country. This follows Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska, where a new plan for Ukraine was discussed.
Trump indicated he would offer Ukraine security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5, without formal NATO membership. This would mean the U.S. and its allies would assist Ukraine in case of an attack, but not under the full extent of NATO rules. He also stated that the U.S. would sell weapons to NATO, which could then be given to Ukraine.
Zelensky stated that Ukraine’s security depends on the U.S. and the leaders present. He wishes to see an end to the war and is appreciative of the U.S.’s readiness to provide security guarantees. A trilateral meeting is planned to address all sensitive matters, which President Trump will strive to organize. Ukraine is prepared to stop the war and seeks the return of its people.
