Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has issued sharp criticism of President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, asserting that these policies have undone decades of Western attempts to realign India away from its Cold War associations with the Soviet Union and address the growing influence of China. In posts on X, Bolton claimed Trump’s economic strategy jeopardized strategic gains, while simultaneously granting Chinese President Xi Jinping an opening to reshape the geopolitical landscape in the East. Bolton specifically pointed out that Trump’s policies have undone efforts to shift India away from its historical ties. He also suggested that Trump’s failure to consider broader strategic implications has benefited Xi Jinping. Bolton served as National Security Advisor under Trump. The remarks were made following the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. Prime Minister Modi engaged in bilateral meetings with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the summit. Modi and Xi Jinping acknowledged the stabilizing effect of their economies on global trade. Modi also highlighted the robust relationship between India and Russia.
