As the world awaits the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15th, a new report highlights the severe human toll of the war in Ukraine. The report, compiled by Meduza and the BBC Russian Service, indicates that over 121,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the conflict. The data, collected from February 24, 2022, to July 31, 2025, is based on publicly available information, including media reports and social media posts. The actual number of casualties may be significantly higher, as both Moscow and Kyiv tend to release low official figures. The report details that among the deceased are volunteers, convicts recruited from prisons, and conscripted soldiers. The Ukrainian estimate suggests that Russia has suffered over a million total casualties.
