The appointment of Sergio Gor as the US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia marks a significant shift in diplomatic strategy. This marks the first time an ambassador to India has also been designated as a Special Envoy for the region. This will likely enhance Gor’s influence and authority.
Former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal stated on X that this could mean Gor will have a wider mandate covering the jurisdiction of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in the State Department. This development has raised some concerns in India. India has traditionally resisted being linked with Pakistan in US foreign policy.
