The safety and well-being of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan are under intense scrutiny, as his son, Kasim Khan, appeals to the global community for “proof of life.” Kasim Khan alleges his father has been subjected to six weeks of extreme solitary confinement in a “death cell” at Adiala Jail, with all communication channels severed. Since his incarceration in August 2023 on what are described as politically fabricated corruption charges, Khan has allegedly been denied family visits, legal access, and phone calls, despite judicial approvals for weekly meetings.
Kasim Khan has explicitly warned Pakistani officials and their supporters that they will be held accountable on legal, moral, and international fronts for his father’s condition and the consequences of his isolated confinement. This distressing situation is mirrored by Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, who has expressed concerns about the “illegal” nature of the isolation and believes the government is wary of Khan’s immense popularity. Reports from PTI leaders indicate no visits have been permitted for over three weeks, igniting speculation about Khan’s health, though jail authorities maintain he is well and not slated for transfer.
The PTI has also highlighted other deprivations, including the withholding of books, newspapers, and adequate medical care. Party officials claim that court-ordered meetings involving up to six individuals, including Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi, are being obstructed. Since his 2023 arrest and the subsequent crackdown on his party, Imran Khan has been serving a 14-year prison sentence. The PTI alleges that he is being held under conditions comparable to a “terrorist cell” and is facing psychological torture, far removed from standard jail regulations that should afford him certain privileges.
