The United States Department of Labor (DOL) has initiated an aggressive crackdown on the H-1B visa program, launching more than 175 investigations into suspected instances of abuse. The H-1B visa facilitates the employment of highly skilled foreign nationals in specialized U.S. industries, including technology and engineering. This widespread investigation initiative aligns with broader efforts to reform immigration policies and ensure that American workers are not disadvantaged.
‘Project Firewall,’ a DOL enforcement drive that began in September, is central to this effort. It is designed to guarantee compliance with H-1B regulations and prevent companies from using underpaid foreign labor to replace qualified American employees. In a significant development, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is personally overseeing and certifying the commencement of these probes, a groundbreaking move for the department.
“We are committed to stopping H-1B visa abuse by leveraging every available resource,” Secretary Chavez-DeRemer stated. “This personal certification of investigations into potential violations is a critical measure to safeguard American jobs.”
Further emphasizing its commitment, the DOL released a new social media campaign. The campaign’s video directly targets companies accused of misusing the H-1B program to substitute young American workers with more affordable foreign talent. The advertisement highlighted India as the predominant beneficiary of the visa scheme, asserting that the “American Dream has been stolen” from American youth due to pervasive H-1B visa misuse.
These substantial investigative actions demonstrate Washington’s resolve to prioritize domestic hiring and implement stricter oversight of programs that bring in foreign workers.
