In a notable intervention, former US President Donald Trump has penned a letter to Israeli President Isaac Herzog, urging him to issue a full pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amidst his ongoing corruption trial. Trump characterized the legal proceedings against Netanyahu as “political” and “unjustified,” escalating concerns about the impact of American influence on Israel’s internal governance.
Netanyahu, who is the only sitting prime minister in Israeli history to face trial, is charged with multiple counts of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery. He vehemently denies all accusations, labeling the case a “witch hunt.” In response to Trump’s latest plea, Netanyahu shared his appreciation on X, noting Trump’s directness and support. This development follows Trump’s prior advocacy for Netanyahu during a recent visit aimed at discussing peace initiatives.
President Herzog’s office confirmed receipt of Trump’s letter. However, according to Israeli law, a formal pardon request must be submitted. President Herzog has previously suggested that the trial has been a detrimental distraction for the nation and has expressed hope for a resolution. Trump’s appeal, while welcomed by Netanyahu’s political allies, has renewed discussions about the boundaries of foreign influence in sensitive Israeli matters, especially concerning regional security dynamics.
