A new advertising campaign by the U.S. Department of Labor is shining a spotlight on alleged abuses within the H1B visa system, with an implicit critique aimed at India, the largest beneficiary of these visas. The campaign’s central message is that the “American Dream” is being undermined as American jobs are allegedly being replaced by foreign workers through loopholes in the visa program. The department aims to hold companies accountable and reassert the priority of American employment.
On the social platform X, the department articulated that many young Americans feel their opportunities have been curtailed due to the “widespread abuse” of the H1B system. The statement further indicates that the government is taking action to ensure companies are not exploiting the program to the detriment of its own citizens. This effort is part of a broader initiative, including “Project Firewall,” which was established in September 2025.
Project Firewall is designed to conduct thorough audits of companies utilizing the H1B visa program, ensuring they are not replacing American employees with cheaper foreign labor, especially in high-demand sectors like technology and engineering. The campaign’s accompanying video uses historical visuals to emphasize a perceived decline in opportunities for Americans, noting that 72% of H1B visa approvals benefit Indian applicants. The initiative seeks to demonstrate a commitment to protecting domestic jobs and ensuring fair competition in the labor market.
