The relationship between India and the United States faces challenges, especially regarding tariffs, trade practices, and the H-1B visa. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar recently met with US Senator Marco Rubio in New York. Following the meeting, Rubio affirmed India’s status as a key partner for the United States. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Rubio highlighted the special importance of the relationship with New Delhi for the United States. The US Department of State revealed that the meeting between the two diplomats addressed various aspects of the India-US relationship, including trade, defense, energy, pharmaceuticals, and crucial minerals. Foreign Minister Jaishankar posted on X about the meeting, saying that a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern were discussed. They agreed on the importance of continued collaboration for progress in key areas and that they would maintain contact. Tensions have been rising in trade relations because of moves by the Trump administration. This includes a 25% additional tariff on Indian goods due to the purchase of Russian oil by India, leading to higher US tariffs on Indian goods. Trump explained that this was to pressure Russia and its allies to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine. However, India has consistently supported a ceasefire. Despite some negative commentary regarding India-Russia ties from certain White House officials, both Donald Trump and PM Modi have voiced their commitment to strengthening ties and restarting trade talks.
