In the wake of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, President Trump has signaled the possibility of negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program. Trump indicated that discussions between US and Iranian officials are expected next week. This comes despite Iran’s stated commitment to its nuclear program. Conflicting reports exist regarding the extent of damage to Iranian nuclear facilities, with the US and Israel claiming significant hits.
Speaking at the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump hinted at potential talks and a possible agreement. “We’re going to talk to them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement. I don’t know. To me, I don’t think it’s that necessary,” he said.
Trump further stated that Iran’s priority now is recovery rather than enrichment. The US envoy to the United Nations, Dorothy Shea, had previously stated the US strikes had been effective in curbing Iran’s ability to create nuclear weapons. There has been no confirmation from Iran about these upcoming talks. President Trump stated he asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio to draft a potential agreement, indicating the ceasefire is proceeding well.
