According to US Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, Indian refiners are indicating they will decrease their purchases of Russian oil. This claim follows a diplomatic mission to India, Pakistan, and Nepal. Fitzpatrick asserts that sustained pressure from the US is the primary reason for this potential shift. While in India, Fitzpatrick’s delegation held discussions with high-ranking officials, including the External Affairs Minister and National Security Advisors. These engagements, combined with ongoing diplomatic efforts, are said to have produced early signs from Indian refiners of a possible reduction in Russian oil imports. The move comes as economic tensions between India and the US increase, due to tariffs on Indian imports, with added penalties linked to the purchase of Russian crude.
Fitzpatrick stated that this step would weaken Russia’s ability to finance the war. In India, the delegation’s direct involvement helped bring about the initial signals of reduced Russian oil imports. Beyond India, the congressional delegation also visited Pakistan, where they held high-level meetings, and Nepal, focusing on counterterrorism and security cooperation.
