The imposition of tariffs on India by the US, as explained by Vice President JD Vance, is a strategy aimed at influencing Russia’s actions in the context of the Ukraine war. The tariffs, initiated by President Trump, are intended to financially pressure Russia by reducing its oil export earnings.
The United States has levied a 50% tariff on India, with 25% designated as a penalty, effective from August 27th. The penalty stems from India’s ongoing oil imports from Russia, which has resulted in strained trade relations.
India has consistently defended its oil import strategy, stating it is in its national interest. Following the onset of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, many Western nations and imposed sanctions on Russia, and India began purchasing discounted Russian oil.
