Following Donald Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs, China has issued a response, specifically addressing the former president’s comments on Sino-Russian relations. Foreign Minister Wang Yi has taken a clear position, stating China’s dedication to peaceful resolutions and dismissing the possibility of retaliatory tariffs. This comes after Trump’s call for tariffs between 50-100% on Chinese imports.
Speaking at a media conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Wang Yi underscored China’s commitment to dialogue, emphasizing that conflict is not the solution and that sanctions only complicate matters. He stated China’s policy of not participating in war and instead prioritizing peace talks, focusing on political solutions through negotiation.
Wang Yi also emphasized China’s responsible role on the global stage, citing its strong record on peace and security. He advocated for multilateralism, the reinforcement of international mechanisms, and the joint defense of UN Charter principles.
He further suggested that in the face of worldwide turmoil, China and Europe should foster cooperation rather than competition.
The comments were made in the context of Trump’s call for tariffs on Chinese purchases of Russian oil until the Ukraine war ends. Trump, in a Truth Social post, criticized NATO’s commitment and the purchase of Russian oil by some members.
Trump stated that these actions weaken their position in negotiations with Russia.
